With a finish time of 55h 45 James and the rest of the team are the newest members of the Charly Miller Society. Congratulations James.

I woke the girls shortly before James was due to arrive at the finish in Guyancourt. We watched the live webcam online as we snuggled up in bed. About half an hour after he finished we all spoke with him on the phone. Although he was tired he sounded like he still had lots of kilometers left in him.

He confirmed that most of those 55 hours 45 mins were spent in the saddle with stops at controls limited to 15mins or under. An impressive endurance ride!

He’s heading off to shower and the girls and I will try to get some sleep before the boys wake up in a couple of hours. We plan to chat with James on Skype and hear all about the ride. I wonder if they had any time to take photos?

They did it! They arrived in Dreux at 9:27am, that’s 20mins earlier than the anticipated window! Now they have a bit of a time cushion for reaching the finish.

I was so excited that I had to call James. I’ve left a few messages along the route knowing that I probably wouldn’t speak with him until it was all over. Before I called I checked on the status of his phone and it was supposed to be off. I didn’t want to disrupt any cycling flow if they were back on the bikes. But the phone was on and he answered!

He was still at the control in Dreux. He was eating. He was upbeat and it was wonderful to hear the contained excitement in his voice. They are all pumped with adrenaline right now. They are hopeful they can make it in under 56 hours. Now let’s hope everything goes smoothly and the bodies and the bikes stay in good working order.

Oh, and James reported that Ben is about 40mins behind them so he may still make the Charly Miller time of 56h40 or under. James and the team set a more ambitious time goal!

You can brush up on your Charly Miller knowledge here while we await the final result in about 3 hours.

They have made it to Villaines la Juhel and Mortagne-au-Perche.  At this point there are just five of them: Robin, James, Greg, Bill and Bob. I’ve had a chance to do some detailed checking of the control times and stage speeds of the other five team mates and this is what seems to have happened.  It will be interesting to compare notes with James when they have finished and see if these deductions tally with what actually happened on the road.

As well as Robin, James, Greg, Bill and Bob, there were also Alex, Ken, Ben and Jan.

It would appear that neither Alex nor Ken started with the team. Ken left with the 90h riders on Sunday 8/21 and abandoned the ride in Carhaix before reaching Brest.  Alex left with the 80h riders but had a start time of 5:19am, whereas the rest of the team had a start time of 4:59am. Only 2 waves of 80h riders went out on Monday morning. The team seems to have been in the first wave and Alex in the second. The most recent control that he checked into was Ludeac on the return from Brest.

Ben rode with the team all the way to Villaines on the return from Brest, but dropped off the pace line en route to Mortagne. The team arrived in Mortagne at 6:23am French time/9:23pm Seattle time. Ben arrived in Mortagne 40mins after the team.

Jan looks to have started with the team. Her start time is the same as the team’s but her speed on the first stage to Villaines was slower. She arrived at the first control at 1:50pm, which was 1h 9mins after the teams arrival at 12:41pm. It is still unclear what is happening with Jan as her control chip has registered now for the the earlier controls between Fougeres and Carhaix and indicates she made it to Brest. Hopefully she is still on the road and able to finish. She will now have to finish within the 80h time limit.

So much unknown. So much to speculate about. So much to tease out and discuss with James eventually. This ride is fast, furious and fun to follow!

James is due into Dreux between 9:47am and 10:02am French time/12:47am and 1:02am Seattle time. I won’t be staying up for that check-in. Hopefully I will be sleeping and will set my alarm for 3:15am. And just to give you some sense of what they are aiming for timewise as they ride to Dreux and then onto the finish at Guyancourt I have made some rough-ish calculations (which now means I may not be able to sleep as my own adrenaline kicks in anticipating this down to the wire final 140k/87m):

They arrived in Mortagne at 6:23am French time.

It is 75k from Mortagne-au-Perche to Dreux and 65k from Dreux to the finish.

If they maintain a constant speed of 22k/h (13.67m/h), they should arrive in Dreux at about 10:04am. They need to leave Dreux at around 10am to get to the finish for 56h.

They can’t leave Dreux immediately,  as they each have to get their control card stamped.

If they leave Dreux a minute or two before 10am and again maintain a constant speed of 22k/h (13.67m/h), they should arrive at the finish for the 56h end time.

So it all depends on how their pace line works heading into Dreux. Can they pick up the pace to get in, have their control cards stamped and be out again by 10am? The pace line went from 6 to 5 riders heading into Mortagne and they still maintained their pace. Now, with only 5 riders, can they pick up the pace a little to race into Guyancourt with a minute or two of wiggle room? Breathe with me everyone, breathe! What do you think the chances are of me falling to sleep now??? 🙂

James arrived in Fougeres at 10:08pm French time, 1:08pm Seattle time. That was on the early end of the predicted one hour window for arrival at the control. This is good because, as of this control, they have a 47min cushion of time to meet their finishing goal of 56 hours. They have 4 more controls, which includes the finish as the last control:

88km/54.68m to Villaines la Jouhel

81km/50.33m to Mortagne-au-Perche (which doesn’t show online when they check in)

75km/46.6m to Dreux (which wasn’t on the route out to Brest, but is part of the route on the return)

65km/40.39m to the finish at Guyancourt in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines.

As he cycles from Fougeres to Villaines la Jouhel, I wonder if James will be thinking about PBP 2007. He had to abandon his ride in Fougeres with 922km completed. He had experienced mild hypothermia and some stomach problems which left him vomiting and unable to ingest any nutrition for about 150k to Fougeres. Thinking about that amazes me still. He just kept riding even when very sick and only abandoned when he knew he just couldn’t ride anymore. From Fougeres he got a ride to Villaines and had to stay overnight to catch an infrequent train to Paris.

I wonder if he shudders when he remembers the hypothermia and if he feels a surge of exhiliration as he cycles towards Villaines le Jouhel now. I am so thrilled for him and hope all goes well these last 310km/192m.

The PBP 2011 website has lots of great information about the ride. If you haven’t checked it out yet, you might like to start with their interactive maps for each stage of the route. This link will take you to stage 11, which is Tinteniac to Fougeres, the stage James is currently riding.

I’m finding this return journey to be frazzling to my nerves 🙂 They arrived in Tinteniac at 7:35pm French time, 11:35am Seattle time and still they push on. It certainly looks like this will be a ride with no sleep and very short rest stops. At least they have to stop at the control to get their cards stamped or they might never get off their bikes!

After I see that James has checked in at the control I track the location of his phone through Telestial.ekit.com. About 10mins ago (7:45pm) he was just outside the town of Dinge on the road to Fougeres. So far the weather conditions seem good for cycling, so long as the rain holds off. He would have spent most of the day in the low 60s and it was forecast to be mostly cloudy. On Sunday when the 90 hour riders started the temperature was around 90F. Yikes! A 20-30% chance of rain was forecast today, but lets hope that 70-80% chance of no rain is what they experience.

Fougeres is 54km (36.6m) from Tinteniac. He should arrive there between 1 and 2pm Seattle time (10/11pm French time). He’s not yet riding in the dark, but he will be when he gets closer to the control. Sunset in Northern France is 9:06pm tonight. (I just love Weather Undeground.)

I found this link to a short TV news report about the PBP from TF1. It is the second report a few seconds in, after the report on another bike ride. So don’t be confused by the bicycles in the first report. They show some of the riders on the road to Brest and at the Fougeres control. Note that James would not be stopping to enjoy any of the hot food you see at the control 😦 No time for such pleasure when you’re focusing on Relentless Forward Motion!

Thank goodness most of the children are still in bed, because just as I published my last update James arrived in Loudeac. Trying to monitor this fast pace is certainly providing a challenge to my parenting and housekeeping!!!

Ashley is here in the kitchen with me stretched on the sofa reading her book with a cup of tea and some buttered Jacobs Cream Crackers. She woke up just as I came downstairs from tending the boys earlier and wanted to join my vigil. She was so excited to discover that James is on the return leg of the ride. She and I have been monitoring all the statistics closely as the ride has progressed. Caitlin is interested in knowing that he has made each of the controls and all is going well. Ethan loves hearing that daddy is still riding his bike. Sean likes to hear the word ‘daddy’. Each age supports as they can 🙂

So he’s through Loudeac. I called his phone 9 minutes after the posted time of his arrival there. I didn’t expect him to answer and he didn’t. We knew that he wouldn’t have time to check messages or talk on the phone, but it helped me to feel closer to him leaving a message of support for him to hear later.

Estimated time of arrival at Tinteniac should be somewhere between 7:20pm and 8:20pm French time (10:20am and 11:20am Seattle time).

On y va! (On we go!)

They made it to Brest and then Carhaix again while we slept. I checked in at 5:45am because I couldn’t resist 🙂 Ethan woke me up a little earlier than this with a distressed little cry of “I’m sick, I’m sick.” He has a cold and a cough and his nose was both blocked and dripping (!), probably from crying. He wanted a tissue. His cries woke up Sean. I wiped noses, nursed, snuggled and sang to them and resettled them in their cribs.

When I came down stairs I must have still been groggy because when I first checked James’s status and saw Carhaix I did a double take, check the clock, made a quick mental calculation and felt a moment of alarm that something had happened and he hadn’t made it to Brest! Then as I looked at the record of the previous controls I saw Brest and the previous entry for Carhaix. I felt a rush of relief.

Their team is still intact and it looks like Jan made her way out to Carhaix. I checked her frame number to see if there were any changes in her status and she comes up as having made it to Carhaix shortly after the lads. I can only imagine she came out to join Amy and Trudy in the support car and was carrying her tracker when she arrived. I wonder if the computerized tracking system just picked up on her or if she handed it in at the control there. It feels good to think of her making her way to her team mates and offering her support as they make the return journey. Jan is such a nice person and a strong rider. I’m disappointed for her that she didn’t finish. Kudos to her for rejoining the team to see them through the end.

They should arrive again in Loudeac shortly.

They continue forward, relentlessly. They reached Carhaix-Plougeur at 2:58am Tuesday 8/23 French time, Monday 8/22 5:58pm Seattle time. I am so thrilled that I worked out they might get there between 6 and 7pm. At 6:30pm I checked his status on the PBP tracker  and let out a big cheer when and I saw that he’d arrived. Ashley, Caitlin and Ethan shared my excitement as I prepared to serve dinner. This is so thrilling to follow. It all seems to be happening so fast.

I’m wondering if they are feeling exhilarated and pushing for getting past the 600k mark before stopping for a rest. I’m inclined to think they are pushing for the 60ok mark but not the rest. There pace is dropping each step of the way, which is to be expected if they are not taking many (any?) breaks. However, 23.9km/h (14.9m/h) is still pretty good at this stage. James averaged about 12m/h when he rode PBP 2007. They were 1hr 59mins ahead of the time they must depart Carhaix to keep to there schedule. I can’t imagine their team leader wanting them to use up that time on a long nap. They are cycling in the dark at this point but they’re not even 24hrs into the ride yet, so that isn’t long enough in the saddle to be concerned about sleep deprivation.

Now we’ll see if they arrive in Brest within the next 4 to 5 hours that would be 10 to 11pm Seattle time. Dare I stay up to check? If they decide to rest in Carhaix it might be midnight or more until they get to Brest. Maybe an 11pm bedtime wouldn’t be too bad…resist, resist, resist! Think of the children!
